On the Launching Ceremony of “Sino-Pakistan Friendship Year” in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse today, participants stressed that “Pakistan will be the crucial part in the construction of the ‘New Silk Road’”.

At the beginning of last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Pakistan President Mamnoon Hussain jointly confirmed 2015 as Sino-Pakistan Friendship Year. On January 19th, the launching ceremony of “Sino-Pakistan Friendship Year” was held, and over 200 participants from China and Pakistan attended.

Zhao Baige, Vice Director of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress said that China and Pakistan have developed a precious friendship through the years. With regard to future development of the two countries, she has three suggestions. First is to strengthen communication between the leaderships and deepen strategic consensus; Second is to promote the sharing of intelligence, experience and successful models, strengthen communication between nongovernmental think tanks and the academic field, and share resources and information to avoid detours in the process of development; Third is to strengthen capacity building of both cooperating sides, build a platform for leaders in all areas to share managerial experience, and enhance training and exchange of business talents. Furthermore, cultural communication and friendship among the people of the two countries is also crucial.

Pakistan Ambassador to China Masood Khalid said: “Recently, we have broken new grounds of cooperation. In line with the vision of President Xi Jinping to revive the old Silk Route through operationalization of Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, Pakistan and China are working on the mega project of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor which has now become an important policy instrument for regional connectivity and regional integration. The Silk Road economic belt will connect different regions and civilizations, enhancing trade, economic growth and common prosperity. By linking the Gwadar Port via the Karakorum Highway with Xinjiang, economic Corridor will be a game changer. Once such connectivity becomes effective, Pakistan will serve as a bridge for China with Middle East, Africa and Europe, for its trade and energy requirements. These transportation routes will greatly reduce the distances for China’s trade that is now done through Indian Ocean and the Malacca Straits.”

China Ambassador to Pakistan Sun Weidong said: “Pakistan has a huge potential in country development and is also an important partner to China in South Asia. China and Pakistan have decided to construct the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is a significant decision in opening up to the west, promoting regional economic integration and regional connectivity. This decision will not only benefit the people of the two countries, but will also facilitate economic cooperation and connectivity in the region. Over the past year, construction of the ‘belt and road’ has achieved new progress, and Pakistan has the potential to play an active leading role in promoting interconnection and expanding cooperation in the region. We look forward to working with Pakistan in the promotion of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, strengthen mutual beneficial cooperation and economic connection, and benefit the people of the two countries. This year is Sino-Pakistan Friendship Year, which is a consensus among the leadership of the countries. Both sides are prepared to hold a series of events to promote the understanding, trust and friendship between the two peoples, let the friendly relationship be handed down the generations, and let more people join the cause of Sino-Pakistan friendship. In general, China Pakistan all-weather strategic partnership and all-round cooperation is facing a huge opportunity. We should grab it and push further forward. Pakistan is becoming increasingly important to China, and there are many areas in which we can cooperate. Both sides should fully exploit their potentials, continually expand cooperation fields, and truly make China Pakistan Relationship become a model of interstate relations, the forerunner of mutually beneficial cooperation, and an important basis of mutual support. ”

Senator of the Pakistan National Alliance Mushahid Hussain said: “Placed at the crossroads of three great mountain ranges of the Himalayas, the Hindukush and the Karakorums, Pakistan, a neighbour and best friend of China, is uniquely placed to play a pivotal role in realising the vision of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Maritime Silk Road. A key component of this will be the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which will link the Pakistan port of Gwadar, part of the Maritime Silk Road, winding up north on the Chinese-built Karakorum Friendship Highway to the Chinese ancient city of Kashgar on the Silk Road, a unique fusion of corridors, culture and connectivity. No other country is able to play such a crucial role as Pakistan will, by being a bridge between the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Maritime Silk Road.”

Having investigated on the four routes of the Silk Road for 25 years, Director of Tsinghua International Centre for Communication Professor Li Xiguang said: “The ‘belt and road’ strategy that Xi Jinping has proposed has major stakes in China’s geopolitical corridor. Pakistan is the only all-weather strategic partner of China and plays an irreplaceable role. The Gwadar port on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor will become the future commercial and trade center in the region, provide the main pulling power for Pakistan’s economic growth, offer military strategic support for Pakistan, become an important stronghold on the world energy routes, and become one of the most important ports in Asia and the whole world. Moreover, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor will make Xinjiang the ‘export gate’ of western China, improving the economic structure of Xinjiang’s industry on the whole, exploit Xinjiang’s economic potential and geographical advantage, and thus radiate through the whole region of South Asia and Middle East. ”

On the launching ceremony today, “A Learning Caravan on Asian Borderlands” edited by Li Xiguang was also released. This book records interviews and stories written by Chinese college students during their three visits to Pakistan led by Li Xiguang, and includes first-hand materials in many important areas along the “belt and road”, such as Islamabad, Gwadar Port and Balochistan province. Li Xiguang has been to Pakistan seven times respectively for investigation and research. Six years ago, Pakistan's cabinet granted him “Pakistan's Supreme Leader Award” in the name of the President.
